One complete 10-player group is shown. Two builders start behind the block, two attackers occupy the marked receiving pocket and two supports wait beyond it. Four red defenders form two starting lines; use one ball.

Coaching points

  • Setup: Two builders start behind the block, two attackers occupy the marked receiving pocket and two supports wait beyond it. Four red defenders form two starting lines; use one ball.
  • Play: Builders may circulate or connect with a pocket attacker. Use a return, a partner connection or a direct forward pass to find a far support beyond the block. A controlled far-support reception after a pocket connection scores one. Defenders can shift and intercept but cannot tackle or body-check.
  • Reset and rotation: Stop after the far reception, interception or ball out and restart with the other builder. After 45 seconds rotate builders, pocket attackers and far supports; swap two attackers with two defenders each next bout so every player experiences both roles.
  • Numbers: The diagram shows 10 players. With up to 20, use a second complete group in a separate area. Odd spare players rest off the area and rotate into a playing role every 45 seconds; everyone has equal turns.
  • Coach focus: The pocket receiver should choose a continuation from the actual pressure, rather than always turn or always set back. Builders remain available for a second passing route.
  • Safety: Ground play and controlled defensive movement; no contact, offside trap or sprint race. Give receivers room and stop any repetition that becomes congested.

Equipment

  • Ball · 2 per group, including a spare
  • Flat Marker · 8 per group for field and zone corners, in addition to pictured markers
  • Bib · 10 per group; colours match the pictured roles

Progressions

  • Easier Defenders walk and begin further from the pocket; the pocket receiver may settle before continuing.
  • Harder Defenders vary which forward lane they screen, requiring the pocket receiver to choose a return or another forward route.
