One complete 3-player group is shown. A server faces a receiver, with one passive red shadow behind the receiver. Place two wide side exit gates. Use one ball and leave a clear gap between receiver and shadow.

Coaching points

  • Setup: A server faces a receiver, with one passive red shadow behind the receiver. Place two wide side exit gates. Use one ball and leave a clear gap between receiver and shadow.
  • Play: The server delivers gently. The shadow walks towards one side without touching the receiver or ball. Receive into the space away from the shadow, turn and carry under control through the other exit. One controlled escape earns one; stop after the exit.
  • Reset and rotation: Return the ball outside the route with everyone stopped. Rotate server to receiver, receiver to shadow and shadow to server after each turn. Alternate the shadow’s starting side and rest after 45 seconds.
  • Numbers: The diagram shows 3 players. With up to 6, use a second complete group in a separate area. Odd spare players rest off the area and rotate into a playing role every 45 seconds; everyone has equal turns.
  • Coach focus: Scan the shadow before service and place the first touch between safe body position and free exit. Protect through positioning, never through pushing or deliberate contact.
  • Safety: Passive rear shadow only: no tackling, touching, leaning or physical shielding contact. Ground service and walking pressure; stop if the exit is blocked.

Equipment

  • Ball · 2 per group, including a spare
  • Gate · 2 per group
  • Flat Marker · 4 per group for field and zone corners, in addition to pictured markers
  • Bib · 3 per group; colours match the pictured roles

Progressions

  • Easier Keep the shadow stationary and choose an exit before the service.
  • Harder Let the shadow choose its side before delivery and ask the receiver to re-scan; the shadow still cannot challenge.
