Coaching points

  • Setup: Two blue face two red between two secured empty mini goals; blue attacks right and red left. Two teal support players stay on opposite touchlines outside the playing contest and assist the team in possession. Only one ball is active; support is protected from challenges.
  • Play: The team in possession may connect with either edge support and then seek a clear ground finish for one point. A support player returns the ball inside within two comfortable touches and cannot shoot or enter. Using support is optional: select a direct shot when clear, or use the overload when the screen closes it.
  • Reset and rotation: A goal or ball out stops play and the other team restarts centrally. A regain can continue towards the opposite target until the attempt ends. Use 45-second bouts, then rest and rotate all six through inside and edge roles before restarting.
  • Numbers: The diagram shows 6 players. With up to 12, use a second complete group in a separate area. Odd spare players rest off the area and rotate into a playing role every 45 seconds; everyone has equal turns.
  • Coach focus: Edge support should change the available shooting angle, not simply increase a passing total. Inside partners move after the outlet and check the return route; evaluate whether the next touch provides a genuinely clear ground shot.
  • Safety: Ground passes and placed shots, no goalkeeper, contact, slides or occupied-foot tackles. Defenders intercept exposed or travelling balls only and cannot challenge edge support. Keep support and retrieval routes clear; collect only after play stops.

Equipment

  • Ball · 2 per group, including a spare
  • Mini Goal · 2 per group
  • Flat Marker · 4 per group for field and zone corners, in addition to pictured markers
  • Bib · 6 per group; colours match the pictured roles

Progressions

  • Easier Defenders walk and edge support can stop the ball before returning it.
  • Harder Alter the initial defensive screen so the ball holder chooses direct finishing or either edge outlet; retain protected support, safe ground service and comfortable touches.
