Setup
Step 1 of 2
One complete 3-player group is shown. Two blue end players remain inside protected strips at opposite ends. One red defender starts in the central area; one ball starts with blue 1. Red cannot enter the end strips, so possession at either end is protected.
Coaching points
- Setup: Two blue end players remain inside protected strips at opposite ends. One red defender starts in the central area; one ball starts with blue 1. Red cannot enter the end strips, so possession at either end is protected.
- Play: The ball holder may walk sideways within the strip, then pass along the ground to the opposite end player. Red watches both players and shifts to intercept the travelling ball for one defensive point. A completed pass ends that turn without an attacking score. No one challenges the ball at an end player’s feet.
- Reset and rotation: Stop after each pass or interception. Return the ball by a clear outside route and rotate all three through the central role after three attempts. Rest after 45 seconds and move the starting side; red begins ready, never running across a player.
- Numbers: The diagram shows 3 players. With up to 6, use a second complete group in a separate area. Odd spare players rest off the area and rotate into a playing role every 45 seconds; everyone has equal turns.
- Coach focus: Find the line between the ball holder and receiver before the pass. Adjust with small steps and see the ball leave the foot; avoid guessing a route so early that the defender loses the receiver.
- Safety: Ground passes only. Walking opposition may intercept travelling or exposed balls, never tackle an occupied foot, slide, push or force contact. Stop when routes converge; collect and change roles only with play stopped. Red remains outside both protected end strips.
Equipment
- Ball · 2 per group, including a spare
- Flat Marker · 8 per group for field and zone corners, in addition to pictured markers
- Bib · 3 per group; colours match the pictured roles
Progressions
- Easier End players stay still and announce which side of the receiver the pass will use.
- Harder The receiver chooses a different lateral position within the end strip before each pass; retain one gentle pass and a stopped reset.
